The monochrome series Little Monsters is based on ancient Chinese characters written in seal script (篆书, zhuanshu) — the archaic script that grew out of inscriptions on bronze and stone. In this script the sign still holds the memory of an image: its rounded, semi-pictographic forms faintly resemble fantastical creatures. In these works I form the background with the pigment rather than the monsters themselves, giving pulse and movement to the space around them.
