COLLABORATION
Ermakova x Yandex Cloud
2023
Yandex Secure Future is a project by cross-disciplinary artist Evgenya Ermakova and Yandex Cloud that offers a fresh perspective on neural networks. A random CAPTCHA algorithm designed as a security tool by Yandex Cloud is reimagined by the artist and imbued a different interpretation. The displayed works draw viewers’ attention to the poetic aspect of seemingly uncomplicated word combinations and seek to evoke a stream of peculiar images and narratives in everyone, thereby raising a question about the poetic potential of neural networks.

The project featured 3 artworks and was unveiled at a private event in Cyberdom.
No Name, 2023
MDF, acrylic, plastic
270,9x218 cm

Not only does the installation display AI-generated poetic word combinations selected by the creator, but it also directs the viewer to the concepts of “house” and “building”. Here, a computer monitor window is replaced by a window of a residential or other structure with a CAPTCHA. This way the artist seeks to emphasize that every space where the user is located or resides is secure.

Magic Sphere, 2023
plastic, liquid, cube

Magic sphere is a tool for guidance, offering direction on various matters. The key is to ask your question correctly, shake the sphere and read the words on the floating cube. By the way, in this artwork, search for the answer to your question in CAPTCHAs.

Sound Design - Yandex SpeechKit
From two speakers placed in the opposite corners of a softly padded room, a whisper recites the word combinations displayed in the installation. Upon entering, the visitor is enveloped by a female voice immersing them in a meditative state.

The project garnered attention, and Yandex Cloud was invited to participate in the annual national “Event of the Year” award (2024) in the “Best Use of Technology” category. The event’s website described it as follows:

Yandex Secure Future is a private evening event for clients and partners, held at Cyberdom - a multi-format space. The concept of the event revolved around the topic of security, with the program rich in AI-generated elements. One of the highlights was the exhibition by Evgenya Ermakova - Poetic Aesthetics of Neural Networks, where the artist explored the poetic and metaphysical essence of CAPTCHAs, prompting reflections on the ethical aspect of AI-human relationships. The visual aspect of the evening focused on generative art and an immersive laser installation, with graphics created by the interactive design studio Akademia, authored by Ilya Derzaev, head of the studio’s development department. The experience was further deepened by an ambient live set from Nikita Zabelin and a performance by Sergey Poltavsky.
